ACES Award for Excellence Winner

The 2019 ACES Award for Excellence in Property Management has been won by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The Award was presented to Marc Clayton (pictured below) representing East Riding of Yorkshire Council by the 2019/20 ACES President, Peter Gregory, at the ACES Annual Meeting held at Glasgow City Chambers. The highly commended entry was by Eastleigh Borough Council.

 

Peter Gregory said:

"ACES members are doing such a lot of good work. The ACES Award for Excellence gives Members the opportunity to showcase what they are doing. This year we received a number of entries from around the country, all of which demonstrated professionalism, innovation and problem solving.

The 2019 ACES Award for Excellence was won by Marc Clayton of East Riding of Yorkshire Council for an innovative project to reverse a decline in social housing stock. The panel felt that this was a project that combined professional skills and excellent delivery with very clearly defined outcomes and social value, with effective use of external funding opportunities.

The highly commended award goes to Eastleigh Borough Council for a soundly professional approach to property investments showing a good mix of partnership working, social value and financial return."

New pollution removal calculator helps tree management decisions

Online calculator shows how trees can improve air quality and cut health costs

A new interactive online tool is set to encourage tree planting initiatives across the UK. It calculates how much pollution would be removed by planting trees in local areas, as well as the corresponding public health cost savings.

 

With hundreds of thousands of trees due to be planted across the country over the next three years in Government-backed schemes, the new tool – Pollution Removal by Vegetation – ­takes national data and makes it locally relevant and accessible for councils, NGOs, developers and other businesses that are considering such initiatives.

 

Scientists at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) teamed up with eftec, a leading environmental economics consultancy, to develop the tool, which shows the existing amount of woodland in each local authority in hectares, how much particulate matter (PM2.5) the trees remove from the air and the resulting predicted public health cost saving within that area over a 100-year period.

Based on the number of hectares of woodland someone wishes to plant within a local authority area, it can calculate:

  • How many kilogrammes of PM2.5 – considered the most serious form of air pollution – would be removed from the air by the extra vegetation
  • The resulting public health cost saving within that area over a 100-year period

The tool can also estimate the effects of felling existing woodland by calculating the health costs attributable to the PM2.5 that would no longer be removed from the air by those trees.

The new tool builds on previous research that CEH and eftec carried out for the Office of National Statistics, which estimated that plants in the UK remove 1.4 million tonnes of air pollution and save £1 billion in avoided health costs every year.

 

Professor Laurence Jones of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology explains: “There is a lot of public concern about the potential health risks that pollution poses in many urban areas of the UK.

“While reducing harmful emissions at source is the best way to improve air quality, the addition of vegetation can play a role in removing pollutants within a local area.”

 

Ian Dickie of eftec adds: “Trees make urban areas more attractive and improve local air quality, thereby boosting people’s health. As our ongoing research has shown, this in turn can have significant positive economic benefits.

“We regularly hear political commitments to plant more trees in urban areas – our new online tool will inform and support the efforts by local and central government, NGOs, businesses and individuals in adding trees in our towns and cities.

We were very pleased with the positive feedback we received about the valuation tool from these stakeholders at a recent webinar and hope it will encourage and support their tree planting initiatives in pollution hotspots.”

ACES Award for Excellence 2019

The prestigious ACES Award for Excellence 2019 opens today.

The Senior Vice President, Peter Gregory, has launched the search for the ACES Award for Excellence 2019 and hopes that the level and standard of entries will match or supercede those of the very successful 2018 Award. The Award will once again be presented at the Annual Luncheon to be held this year in Glasgow on the 15th November 2019.

The deadline for receipt of entries is Friday 30th August 2019. The entry should be sent to the ACES Secretary at secretary@aces.org.uk

SPACES Yearbook and Civic Building of the Year Awards 2019

The deadline for submissions for the 2019 Yearbook and Awards has been extended until Friday 8th March 2019.

SPACES are now looking for submissions for the Yearbook and Civic Building of the Year Awards 2019.

 

You are invited to submit any project which has received an element of public funding. Submissions are invited nationally and can include:

  • New building and refurbishment projects across the public sector
  • Buildings that add value to the communities they serve
  • Buildings from all sectors of public construction
  • Projects that demonstrate collaboration
  • Projects that demonstrate Engineering excellence/ingenuity
  • Surveying projects that renew embedded value
  • Examples of construction team excellence
  • Articles of interest on public sector buildings

 

Anyone can make a submission whether you are the client, architect, contractor, engineer, surveyor or project manager who feels there is merit in a particular building or project.

From these a shortlist will be made of those projects that are eligible to enter the Civic Building of the Year Awards.
